Puppets with Perspective

THE PUPPETEACHING PROJECT

The Puppeteaching Project was inspired by The Cathedral Puppeteers, a Fredericton Puppeteering Group with whom I performed puppet shows throughout New Brunswick, New Hampshire and Belize, and by a World University Service of Canada Internship in Burkina Faso where I led youth in educational puppet theatre to teach elementary school children about hygiene and HIV/AIDS prevention.

It is now a non-profit organization in the works, with the mission of educating children in developing countries about the prevention of diseases affecting their region and staying healthy.

The plan is to train local youths to write and perform the puppet shows on their own, to spread the message in a grassroots manner that really gets the point across, and educates the young puppeteers at the same time.

The goal is to reduce the spread of disease among children and young people in a fun and interactive way!

The Puppeteaching Project Mission Statement

The mission of The Puppeteaching Project is to provide non-formal educational programs through the means of puppetry to ensure a safe, sanitary, healthy and equitable environment for children living in regions affected by dire conditions, and/or below the poverty line.

The Puppeteaching Project fosters the empowerment of children and youth through education by fostering self-realization, self-actualization and mobilization for change, shaping future leaders who will help change their communities’ and countries’ situations in the long-term scheme.

The Puppeteaching Project believes in practices involving awareness and empowerment to bring about transformative, sustainable change in the lives of thousands of children and their families, and generations to come. Participation must be at the forefront for change to occur.

The Puppeteaching Project will engage in a participatory approach, involving local youth in the writing and production of the puppet shows, and supplementing the performances with follow-up workshops and debrief activities. There will also be teacher training seminars to ensure the education is on-going and properly understood.
